A Bug Ran into Me!
The other day I was letting the girls go outside to play in the backyard when the doctor's office called about an important appointment. I was on the phone listening to instructions when I see Hailey coming towards the house crying. I usually don't panic when she runs towards me wailing because she tends to be a bit dramatic. While sobbing she crys something out over and over about a bug, but I am having a difficult time understanding what she is saying while still listening to the nurse. Distracted by the phone call, I give her a hug and assume she is being over-dramatic. I quickly finish up the phone conversation, and seeing that she is still pretty shaken, I question her again as to why she is crying. I said, "Are you hurt?" She then repeats what she had been crying out, this time without the sobs, "A bug ran into me!" I was quite confused until she pointed to her elbow and showed me a small red prick surrounded by swelling. It hits me quite quickly that she had been stung! I proceded to ask her if a bug with wings had flown into her elbow. She shook her head in a very concerned manner. I never would have thought to have described a bee sting to a child as a bug running into her, but it seemed perfectly logical to her! She now knows to stay clear of wasps because they have a tendency to run into things.
